Guildford - A Nice Place to Live, Work and Play

Although now a busy and bustling University town (not a city as widely perceived), Guildford’s much humbler origins began when it was chosen by the Saxons as a suitable settlement because an ancient track crosses the River Wey by a ford at this point.

The County Town of Surrey has come a long way since those days and the Borough of Guildford now boasts a population in excess of 135,000.

Its strategic location makes it a popular dwelling place. A regular fast train service will get you to London in about 35 minutes, whilst the A3 links with the M25 to the north of Guildford, thereby allowing access to the motorway network. Accordingly, both Heathrow and Gatwick airports are readily accessible, while the recently opened Hindhead tunnel has dramatically shortened the journey time to the South Coast.

Educational choice is high with excellent schools including the Royal Grammar School for boys, established in 1509 and granted a Royal Charter by Edward V1 in 1552, and the High School for girls, with almost 1,000 pupils. Good primary and junior schooling is readily available and Guildford College, The College of Law, Guildford School of Acting, The Academy of Contemporary Music and the University of Surrey are all located in the borough.

As you would expect, an extensive range of shopping, cultural and leisure amenities is available, with most major department stores having a presence as well as many more exclusive chains and independents. Theatre goers are well served by the Yvonne Arnaud and Electric Theatres, and G Live, Guildford's entertainment venue, plays host to the finest music, comedy and entertainment.

Sports enthusiasts have plenty to choose from. For the energetic, both the Surrey Sports Park and the Spectrum Leisure Centre provide a full range of activities, while the spectator can choose between Football, Cricket, Ice Hockey, Basketball and Rugby Union and League.

There are rental properties to suit all budgets and according to Television's "The Best and Worst Places to Live in the UK" TV show Guildford was the 12th best place to live in Britain and according to the Eve Prime Retail Survey 2004, Guildford is the most attractive and safe shopping destination in the UK.
